Stereotypes
“Racial profiling just makes sense. But it’s also wrong, so I’m torn.” This phrase, taken from The Onion, sums up the issue of stereotyping a subset of the population due to its perceived characteristics. Stereotypes may or may not make sense, but in the politically correct world, they are often simply out of the boundaries of possible debate. The dominant ideology, or indeed imageology, as Kundera put it, defines what is rational discourse and what is hate speech, even when the two are intuitively the same. Provided that it helps ensure the welfare of the people – and it should do so equally for any group, be it a minority or a majority – this may be a necessary evil, but it is still a dangerous trend. Being ignorant does not solve anything.
