Forget about it
In Donnie Brasco, Johnny Depp’s character explains the various meanings of ‘forget about it’, as used by the mobsters with whom he hangs out, and I was amused to hear the same expression from Cheech, in Bullets over Broadway. The contrast in the portrayal of the mafia in the two movies is amazing, especially because it is subtle in form; Donnie Brasco is a serious movie, inspired by a real case of an FBI agent who infiltrated one of New York’s families, and yet it also shows the pathetic and fragile side of those fierce criminals. Bullets over Broadway is a comedy, but many of the scenes depicting the actions of the mafia are not funny per se. The context makes Donnie Brasco’s potentially funny scenes poignant, and Bullets’ dark scenes hilarious.
Às vezes ouvimos carpir
Um pranto e ninguém sente
E há coisas ditas a rir
Que fazem chorar a gente— António Aleixo, in Este livro que vos deixo (citado de memória)
