The end of genes
The metaphor for genes, in the informatics world, might be that of a library describing a number of objects, which contain interfaces that interact with other objects or the outside world. I wonder if it would be possible to make this image real and eliminate genes altogether. We would need to come up with a mechanical method to direct the cell machinery to synthesize proteins. Imagine the possibilities: genome backups, redundancy, error checking for mRNA… Each cell could be addressable individually through a unique identifier; localized medicine, apoptosis for cancer cells with no secondary effects. No viruses too, at least until the new legion of man made viral nanocomputers…
